Sidekick Showcase [27] Not Who They Say They Are

Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday, is a weekly bookish meme, hosted here by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on my page. Just do the following:

• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fit's in the week's topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post their's throughout the week as well
This week's challenge is NOT WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE
I love surprises in characters! There are so many that spring to mind, but I decided to choose someone who is still a mystery to me since I've only read two books in the series so far. Trent Kalamack from Kim Harrison's The Hollows Series is a beautiful looking man, tall, fit, commanding, possibly...most definitely, maybe? evil to the core! I know all you vets of this series including you, Lexxie, will snicker because you know how Trent's character evolves. He's a mystery from the moment his name is first mentioned. Rachel is clueless about him. You know how people say "He hung the moon"? Think the opposite and that's how Rachel views Trent, despite her inability to overlook his appearance.

“Come work for me, and I’ll tell you.”
My eyes went to his. “You are a thief, a cheat, a murderer, and a not-nice man,” I said calmly. “I don’t like you.”
He shrugged, the motion making him look utterly harmless. “I’m not a thief,” he said. “And I don’t mind manipulating you into working for me when I need it.” He smiled, showing me perfect teeth. “I enjoy it, actually.”
Kim Harrison, The Good, the Bad, and the Undead

“I took a breath, seeing from across the room the rain on his eyelashes. A sudden need to brush them free filled me. I could almost feel the dampness of the rain on my fingers, how soft it would feel.”
Kim Harrison, Dead Witch Walking (I'm pretty sure Rachel's describing Trent as she spies on him)

My sidekicks were wrapped up in talking about the big move coming and Big Brother. My sister might have mentioned Jeanne C. Stein, but heck if I remember why.

  1. YAY you picked Trent! And I promise I'm not snickering! I think Trent is still a mystery of sorts, but I have loved him from the very beginning, he is so slippery it's amazing. You know, the fact that he is so mysterious and never reveals more than the strictest minimum is quite appealing.

Great choice Robyn :) Have a great Sunday!

    1. You're so right. The need to know really is that addictive. I've liked him from the start, but it's been a hoping he's not entirely evil type of infatuation. I also enjoy how he twists Rachel. Al and Trent are fun bad guys. Are you missing Spain or is your inbox keeping you too busy? Have a great week, Lexxie!!

  2. I haven't heard this series before. I just looked it up. There are 12 books in this series? Wow. The longer series I've read is six books.

This Trent though sounds really good character.
    I hope you'll enjoy this series. :)

    1. Hi Athina! I love this series, but I have to spread it out over time. I used to be able to do a series marathon, but my attention span lately is directly related to how many times my boys say, "Mom, mom, mom..." So I have to switch it up. The Hollows is incredibly creative with all the different kinds of magical creatures and a futuristic world where humans are even numbers with witches, vamps, and other stuff. Trent is cool because he's so shady and yet you sense a thread of some kind of integrity. He draws the line somewhere, you just don't know where.

  3. Yep, what a great pick hehehe. I love that you know that he's not who he says he is from all the mystery that he evokes, but you haven't gotten there in the series yet to really know how much. To be honest too, Harrison is just excellent with character development. You can hate, hate, hate a character in one book, and in the next feel pity of even love for the same one. Rachel grows incredibly throughout all the books, and the other characters do as well. When you get to A Perfect Blood, be sure and let me know because there is a special chapter written from Trent's POV that I really enjoy that I can tell you how to find. Love your choice :D Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. You have blown up my TBR list, Jaclyn. I feel so lucky to have all these exciting reads waiting for me. Embarrassment of riches, I tell you. Oh, oh, I forgot to tell you my sister is about to start Dead Witch Walking. Soon she'll be offering Harrison's characters for your sidekick showcase. Tit-for-tat though, so I'll have to start First Grave on the Right soon.

Awesome teaser about A Perfect Blood. I can't wait for Trent's POV! Just 9 or 10 books to go. hehe

    2. YAY so glad to hear she's starting this as well. I think she will definitely throw some of these characters in the ring for Sidekick choices. I love that we all know each other and our likes well enough to offer series up as suggestions that we each enjoy. My TBR will never be short again LOL.

  4. LOL Trent popped into my mind as well, Robyn. :) He is a character that is definitely more than meets the eye. And I have to agree with Jaclyn about Harrison's character development. Trent is a prime example of this...I know my opinion of him has gone through a major shift over the course of the series. I think it's interesting Lexxie has loved him since the beginning! ;)

I hope your weekend was fabulous, Robyn!

    1. Trent frustrates Rachel so much, it's hard not to like him. Harrison is so good. I'm hooked. Jenks is my favorite. I love his family. Al and Trent are so multilayered I can't wait to know more about them. Rachel is a mess and I love her. Busy, busy weekend here. I hope you have a great week. I'll be packing like a crazy girl.
