Think Out Loud [24] I'm a year older and totally grown up...finally. Honest.

My boys have been obsessed with my birthday forever it seems. Months ago Will came at me with a serious expression, "Mom, you're almost forty." "Almost, but not yet. I'm still 38." "You're almost 40!!" "Okay, thanks, Will." John picked up on his brother's power to make me squirm. "How old are you, Mom?" "38." "48?" "No, John. 38." "48. hehehe"

Last week he asked his new step mom, "Tia, how old are you?" "32." Then he looked at me. "And you, mom? How old are you?" As if we hadn't gone through this dozens of times. "38." "Almost 39." Yes, that's my good counter. And now that I'm almost 40! I decided to take a life inventory, and then quit that idea right quick. But here's what I got going for me and all my grownup-ness.
This is me having s'mores (not over an electric stove burner). I'm encased in marshmallow. I have it all over my face and my fingers are glued to my awesome treat and...
there's John asking me to help him because he has chocolate and marshmallow in his hair, on his shirt, all over his face, arms, and hands. I'm cracking up because I can't help him. I can't pry my fingers loose. I can't talk because my mouth is full, but I can snicker until I tear up, which is what I did. Not very pretty, but so much fun. Kid fun. Oh, and that is a zebra on my shirt. The back is the zebra's ass. I'll save the life inventory for deathbed homework and work on this right here, playing.

Be cool and join Think's meme. That's all I gotta say on that.

  1. Amen! You're only as old as you feel...so keep playing! :) Being grown-up is LAME! Life is too short so lots of sticky fun should definitely be had! And happy birthday, my friend. Sorry I'm the type of friend who doesn't know when your birthday is. ;)

I think Jax needs to come give your boys some lessons. He tells me life begins at 40!! (yeah, he's a sweetheart) And this year, I am the answer to the universe - 42, if you haven't read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...his all-time favorite book.

By the way, you finally strong-armed me into participating in this meme. :) Check out my photos. :)

Oh, and I want that zebra shirt!! LOL

    1. LOL! Next time we see each other, I'll let Jax have at the boys. I almost never know my friends and family's birthdays. I'm the type of girl who barely knows it's her own birthday (or her age). One year right before my birthday I had a total Friends moment. I told my sister I was 23. She shook her head and destroyed my world informing me I was actually 24. What the hell? I was really looking forward to being 24 too. I haven't read Jax's favorite book, but I think it's on my TBR list of course. Like my shirt, eh? I've had it since I was 14. So sad. Last week, John told me, "Mom, I've seen this shirt so many times." Sheesh. I love your Think Out Loud post!!

  2. LOL I remember asking my mother every couple of years as a child how old she was for school and everytime she would tell me the same thing, "I'm 32". But then when I got older and my younger siblings started asking she started telling them "35". But to tell you the truth, she's now early 40 ish something and well, we don't now how long she has been 32 and 35 to us these past 12 years! But it's still funny thinking about how many time she forgets how old she's turning and being amazed at how young she looks.

    1. I see the wonder in their eyes when I tell them my age. I'm not sure why they're amazed. I just love the look on their faces. I think our moms just sort of amaze us. Sheesh, I don't think I can pull off lying about my age, plus if my sister (or mom) ever got wind of it, I'd never hear the end of it.

  3. Your boys are too cute; nothing like reminding your parents they're getting older. I used to do that to my parents and now that's me and I think, wow that was not as funny as I thought lol! Looks like y'all had some great fun though - I love s'mores because they are such a messy fun time - that's ALMOST better than their taste (almost, because chocolate and marshmallow is a winning combo). Happy birthday!

    1. It is a winning combo! I'm new to s'mores, but I just saw a commercial for them and the people added caramel. What! I'm so adding caramel next time. I'm no purist. So you weren't that funny, huh? My mom breaks out her karma smile every time the boys do something I did. Not cool.

  4. oh LOL! My kids are the same way! Why are they so obsessed with age? It's only a number, right? That's what I keep telling myself... especially since I've passed 40 - but I can still say I'm thirty-twelve :P The French count really strangely (no, not with the 30s and 40s... but I pretend very well!)

I think the most important thing is the actual playing and goofing around we continue to do with or kids or with friends. I love it when one of my friends invite me to her house for a Just Dance party :) We have so much fun with that!

Have a fantastic Friday, Robyn :)

    1. What is this Just Dance party? Sounds fun! I have no idea what it is about age and our parents when we're kids. They also want me to tell stories about them as babies, which I don't remember doing at all. I haven't been playing enough over the years, so I'm getting back into it. Time to edge off all the seriousness. I can't wait to see what everyone picks for their sidekick of choice this weekend. It's Jaclyn's birthday tomorrow.

      Have a great weekend, Lexxie!!

    2. Just Dance is a game on wii, where there is music, and we have to follow the dance moves that are being shown on the screen. It's really a lot of fun!

Especially my two youngest kids love to watch their baby pictures, and for me to tell them how cute they were when they started talking and stuff like that :)

I had fun with this week's Sidekick - loved yours as well, Robyn :)

    1. Thanks! I enjoyed that day very much. Your John Green unbelievable words Think Out Loud post was so awesome. I need to watch it again. Have a great weekend, Carol!

  6. I agree with Carol - life is so short, so enjoy every moment you can!

I was thirty when I got a Hello Kitty tattoo, thirty-two when I dyed my hair pink, and I'll probably shop at Hot Topic for the rest of my life, lol.

Speaking of Hot Topic, a few weeks ago I was there with the kiddos, and a girl who works there sees me every time I go in. The last time I was there, she said, "I love how you dress. You always wear the coolest stuff. I want to keep dressing like you when I get older, too." I'm like, how old does she think I am?? Like 50? Sheesh! *No offense to anyone who's 50.* I know she meant no harm, but it isn't something I would say to anyone. I asked my friends, "Do I look like a mom who's trying too hard to stay young?" And their answer was nope.

    For the record, I don't think you look thirty-eight, and I don't think I look thirty-two. :D

    1. I totally laughed at that girl saying that to you. People have no idea what comes out of their mouths. When John asked his step mom how old she was I started cracking up. You just do not compare the new wife to the former wife out loud and in front of both of them! I love your look too. I'm totally inspired by it. You guys are right about enjoying life. Even though I laugh a lot, I don't feel like I've been playing enough. Time for some change. I loved your TOL post. I hope all the animals are getting along, and the pets too. hehe

  7. Robyn, you always have wonderful TOLs. I can't believe you didn't save me a S'more though! How rude! LMAO

    1. LOL! Not only did I not save you any, I ate the roasted marshmallow my oldest cooked up. That's the kind of girl I am. hehe

Your TOL was very inspirational. I loved those quotes and your story.
