If weren't for the gore, I'd swear Ilona Andrews took me on a magical fairy ride! On the Edge Review

5 STARS for On the Edge by Ilona Andrews! I took forever with this one only because I started it on a family trip. This isn't a family trip read. It's a tell your kids to fend for themselves so you can lose yourself in this other world read. I think Jack and Georgie stole the show in this one, but Declan and Rose and their slow burn was magic to watch.

Rose lives her life for her two little brothers, Jack and Georgie. Works herself to the bone just to feed and clothe them. And it's not easy in the in-between world they live in. Declan is a mysterious stranger who tempts Rose into daydreams about a different life. She can't afford daydreams with a new dark magic on the loose threatening to consume everything and everyone she loves.

The world building sucked me in and held on tight. I'm not much of a fantasy reader, but everything from the magic use to the shifters were so creatively rendered, I can't wait to read the next book in the series. The tension between Rose and Declan was awesome. The constant threat of a terrible death made my heart race. The kids stole my heart. The grandma was the perfect grandma. And I loved that even the good guys gave me pause. I was giddy over the underlying romance in the story because I'm a total romance girl, but family love stood out more than anything else.

If you haven't read anything by Ilona Andrews (imagine me blinking at you in complete surprise), get on it. You'll get lost in the characters, drama, even the gore is entrancing.

  1. I imagine you blinking at me, Robyn!. :) I plead guilty! I haven't read anything from Ilona Andrews, but I think I found the first one! I added it on TBR list. Thank you for sharing.
And if it weren't for the gore, I wouldn't be so thrilled! LOL

    1. I'm totally blinking at you Athina! I think you'll love the characters, especially the female characters because they are so with it. The Edge series has a stronger romance undercurrent than the Kate Daniels series, but I couldn't tell you which I love more.

I knew I'd hook you with "gore"! Ha!

  2. You know I might give Ilona Andrews another chance, I read her Kinsmen series and I wasn't impressed at all so it's good to see that she has good books too.

    1. I haven't read the Kinsmen series because my library doesn't carry that one. And the first time I tried to read the first Kate Daniels installment I wasn't in the right mood for fantasy and magic, but I tried again and I went on a Ilona Andrews bender. Maybe you'll give The Edge a shot or Kate Daniels. Thanks for stopping by! I loved your Fault in Our Stars review!

  3. Aren't Jack and Georgie the best??? I used Jack as a sidekick once. Yeah, I love this series. But then, I think I'd love anything if Ilona Andrews wrote it! ;) I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, Robyn. <3

    1. Sidekick Showcase has dictated my TBR list since I joined the meme. I remember you choosing Jack and when I was reading On the Edge I kept agreeing with you, "Yeah, Jack is so cool! What a neat kid! I'd totally pick him for a sidekick."

I used to spend too much time at the library searching through the new paperbacks for something to read and then I started blogging. I don't think I'll ever be at a loss for what I'm going to read next!

    1. Ha! You are my Ilona Andrews girl! I remember sending out an SOS for something to read and you told me to read Magic Bites. You had to tell me twice because I wasn't using my listening ears. And then I went on a bender. And now I'm on one again. Don't you rate her books 6 stars because it's just too good? I hope you're having a great week, Jaclyn!!
