The End of a Beloved Series. Crap!
I just read Rachel Caine's newsletter stating Daylighters would be the last installment in the Morganville series. What!? No. Wait. I thought I had more time. I'm not prepared. I love this series.
I'm the first person to say a TV or book series went on too long, but rationalizing a series' end when it's the right time feels like a well thought out break up. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Friends, Angel, Monk, Stargate SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, all shows that ended on the right note at the right time, but that I still miss. Firefly and Wonderfalls are two shows that ended before their time and I still growl about it, mostly Firefly because that was pure awesomeness.
When Richelle Mead's Succubus series ended I paced around my apartment, book in hand, plotting the spinoff. I've never written fanfiction before, but that would have been my first if I knew what it was back then.
As a reader, what are we to do at the end of our favorite stories? Savor the experience? Spin the rest of the tale in our heads? Shrug it off and move on? Get on Goodreads and open a discussion? Whine in a blogpost? Sadness.

I agree with you, Robyn, I'm not ready for the end of Morganville, either. I think Daylighters is a book I'll wait a while before I read it - even if I have it on pre-order. At least when a series end when it's still going strong, we will cherish it forever!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're doing well :) Happy reading.

I really thought we were getting a few more. I must have read an old post on the upcoming books or I just made it up in my head. At least we'll get a cool web show. I don't think I'll be able to wait to read it. Happy reading to you too!
DeleteI understand this exact feeling, it's like a book hangover, but more powerful because you've fallen in love with all of the characters. I haven't read the last couple of the Morganville Vampires, but I love this series so much.

You're right, it's all about the characters. I have no idea how Caine will wrap up the story. Are we going to lose anyone precious? What's the last book you read? I can't wait to see what they do with the web series. I think this is the longest series I've read.
DeleteI haven't started the series yet, but I already don't want it to end, lol!
ReplyDeleteWith Buffy, I love that show to pieces! I do think it ended at the right time. It got kind of dark right after the first season. Do you know how sad I was at the death at the very end of my favorite character??? I felt like I was tortured for no reason. Do you know who I'm talking about? :)
I think I know your favorite character, but he went out in the most awesome way! You never would have guessed from his first appearance on the show that he'd end up like that...unless you're talking about a different character who didn't make it who was a former bad guy who always spoke her mind. There were several heartbreaks in that series. Oz was one of my favorites and what the hell happened with that relationship! Besides the whole werewolf, shewolf, gay girlfriend stuff.
DeleteOkay, got carried away on Buffy. As you can see I LOVE that series. The Morganville series is plain fun. I stress out because they always get into a heap of trouble. But I see you being best friends with Eve and taking Claire under your wing.
Yep, you got it! I just wanted him and Buffy to be together. God, that episode where the building collapses when they finally do the deed was like mind blowing, lol. It's funny because I hated his character when he first was introduced, and then I ended up loving him. Just like Daryl Dixon. I hated him the whole first season, but then he went looking for Carol's daughter and almost got himself killed - well, I softened up toward him and now I'm super hot for him. I know,
DeleteI liked Oz a lot, too! Brady and I could see the difference between how they handled a lesbian relationship on a TV show back then and how they handle it now. Quite a difference.
Can't wait until I get the chance to start Morganville! :D
