Movie review time because I really freaking loved Oblivion

I had no plans to follow through with this movie. Lately every movie I've been waiting to go to DVD has let me down. The previews rock my world only to find I can't sit through fifteen minutes. Grrh! Oblivion had a couple things going for it before I even pressed play. Science fiction and Tom Cruise. I live for end of the world survival drama and Tom's been one of my favorite actors since Legend.

The movie starts off with a 12 Monkeys vibe because the opening scene is a glimpse of the past. Tell me you all saw that movie. It is one of the best of all time. The pacing is slow with long looks and minimal dialogue, but the tech is sleek and sexy. Everything is white or feels white, clean, even the ruins, but then darkness and unknowns are thrown in, which is the least flashy way a movie can create conflict and I loved it. Quiet spooky stuff. Then the music came into play, and I was thrown into a Terminator vibe. Very futuristic everyone is going to die via machine kind of way. I loved it! I was completely creeped out. Tom played one of his most subdued roles ever, almost funny at times. Morgan Freemen excels at that and he did here too. There's a mystery to be solved, humanity to save, and the last man on earth to get laid. Okay, Tom's not the last man on earth, but here he is getting some and the world has ended! That was a little too much, but at least it was very understated, which pays respect to how sci-fi movies should be. Except when it comes to the modern version of Battlestar Galatica. They had the best sex scenes.

4.5 stars for Oblivion and I'm sure I'll watch it again because it's that cool. One more movie vibe reference. Wall-E. Weird, but let me know if you see what I'm saying here.

  1. Oh, Robyn! I watched this movie yesterday. It was good!! Really good. I liked the graphics, the story and I love Freeman. I really enjoyed this movies even if I have some questions that remains unanswered.
But it was the best movie I've seen lately. :)
    Great review.

    1. Freeman is so great. I was surprised the story held my attention so thoroughly. I wasn't left with questions at the end, but I think I'm a lazy moviegoer. There are a few movies I'm looking forward to that recently came to DVD, Now You See Me, The Great Gatsby, and World War Z.

  2. I haven't even heard of this movie yet... I am so behind on movies it's actually pretty sad. But these days, I just love my books so much I don't need movies like I did before.
    Great review, Robyn :)

    1. I was a movie girl long before I fell in love with reading. And I watch it all too, thriller, slapstick, romance, children's. You and Brandee are the same about movies, then again you two are reading beasts.

  3. Nice review, Robyn. I have this movie on my To-Be-Watched list. In fact, I have a lot of movies I want to watch, but little time for that. Did you know yesterday was the first time I watched a full movie since I moved to Canada? :) That movie was The Conjuring. It's a very good movie in the horror genre. If you like horror then you're going to enjoy it. I think I might write a review on it, since I haven't read any novel yet. I need to post and share something on my blog.

Have you seen Gravity with Sandra Bullocks? I heard it's a good sci-fi movie.

    1. The previews for The Conjuring sent me running out of the room, Kaykay. Not kidding. We would love whatever you decided to post, but you know I love my movies, so a movie review would be awesome! I haven't seen Gravity. I didn't think it would be very good. Not the first time I got it wrong. It is so nice to hear from you on my blog! You are not forgotten at all!

    2. The Conjuring was soooo good! I bought it on DVD as soon as it came out, lol! When I went to see it on opening weekend, I'm pretty sure that's the movie where I got so freaked out I spilled pop all over me and my husband. ;)

I'm so glad you loved it, too, Kaykay! :D

  4. I saw Oblivion, too, with my husband. We wanted to go see a movie one weekend, but there weren't any horror movies out. Iron Man 3 was out at that time, but I felt like I could just wait until it comes out on DVD. The second one wasn't as good as the first one for me. But we really liked Oblivion a lot. I was surprised by all the twists and turns. A great sci-fi movie for sure. I keep getting it mixed up with the Matt Damon sci-fi flick - just the names, not really the plot.

    1. Iron Man 2 wasn't the greatest, but I think you'll really like 3 because there's a kid in there that battles wits with Iron Man. Those are the best scenes. No horror movies out? Sadness.

Oh, oh, I watched World War Z. Loved it. Watched it again. Very low key as far as zombie movie gore goes, but awesome as far as adding more to the plot than merely surviving.

    2. I'll give 3 a whirl, lol. I love Robert Downey Jr. Hotness! I'm glad you liked World War Z! We did, too! It was more about the search for a cure to me, so it was interesting to see a zombie flick without a lot of gore. I liked that they added more to the plot than surviving, too. Brady read the book and didn't like it, though. He said it's kind of dry. I've heard some bloggers feel that way, too. I'm still going to try reading it sometime. We have it in paperback.
