Think Out Loud [30] My Ghost Story

At the beginning of my senior year of high school my mom flew off to Hawaii to get my sister settled into college. I was happy to be home alone with the occasional check-in by her boyfriend. The forecasters announced a tropical depression before I went to bed. That morning they changed their tune completely. Super typhoon. Direct hit. I had four dogs at home and me. Then the power was out. The winds slammed the house so fast I only managed shutters on half of the house. Then the rain came. I heard a huge crash, so I ran into the living room. My feet sloshed through two inches of water. I looked outside. A small boat had flown into the back of my car. I turned around and finally noticed that the living room had flooded. I slid my feet over the wet marble, kicked water at the dogs in a playful gesture, and then froze. Their eyes were glued to the corner. I'd never seen them spooked until that moment. I stupidly tiptoed over to get a closer look and jumped back. The corner was dry as a bone. At the sound of whining I looked back at the dogs. In unison they were tracking something I couldn't see. First with their eyes, then their heads moved like some crazy choreographed dog dance. More whining, some whimpering by me, then actual ripples rolled down their backs in spastic body shudders. I wasn't kicking water around anymore that's for sure. I inched away from the freaky corner, but then the dogs yelped and raced into my room and jumped into my bed.

  1. Well that was scary. The rain, the dogs their focus.
    Nice story, Robyn. :)
I guess we all have our fair share of spooky stories.

    Here is my TOL http://between-my-lines.blogspot.gr/2013/10/think-out-loud-ghosts.html

    Happy Halloween.

    1. Those dogs scared the hell out of me. We huddled in my room until the eye of the storm passed over. I read your TOL. Awesome! That is so scary. I hate noises in the night, but you have a story to go with those noises. Ack! You made me all wistful for my grandma.

  2. Wow, I thought it was real, then I thought it must have been a bad dream and now I'm still lost. Did that really happen?

    1. Yep, it really happened. One of the worst storms to hit Guam in decades. Gusts over 200 mph. We didn't have water for two weeks and power for a month. The power generators were so damaged the whole island went on twelve hour power rations. For most of my senior year after the lights came back on we only had power from 7pm to 7am. The storm was way more fun than the aftermath, ghosts included.

  3. Oh my goodness, Robyn. I think I would have freaked out! But what an experience! Mind you, I'm not saying I wish to have such an experience LOL but... Did you ever look into whether or not someone had died in your house or anything?? I do think dogs are sensitive to the paranormal.

    1. You're a funny lady. No way did I want to discover it was a real ghost. Part of me can still blame the storm, my wild imagination, or the dogs playing a practical joke on me. But knowing Guam the way I do, someone probably met with the edge of a machete.

  4. I agree with Brandee. I think dogs (and cats) are sensitive to the paranormal. And kids, lol. I don't know what I would have done - stuff like that in real life freaks me out!! Movies? Books? TV? All fine and well cause I know I'm safe. Real life? No way in hell!! lmao

    1. I'm a total wuss unless I'm in shock then climb on my back and I'll carry you through it. Ghosts freak me out, but it's the evil ghost bit that gets me squealing and running away. Any movie I've ever watched with freaking dead spirits that are pissed off or want revenge or are the agent of the devil, I sit up in my bed with the lights on hoping I can sleep that way.
