Sidekick Showcase, previously known as Sidekick Saturday, is a weekly bookish meme, hosted here by Jaclyn at JC's Book Haven. There are many secondary characters that are as great as the primaries. In some cases, the sidekicks actually steal the show and you like them better than the heroine or hero. Maybe they didn't have enough page time for how great they were. Anyone can play along! I will post my Sidekicks on Saturday, then whichever day during the week that you would like to post yours, you can put your link in on my page. Just do the following:
• Choose a sidekick *or someone other than the hero or heroine* that you would like to put in the spotlight that fit's in the week's topic
• Share a picture (if you can) and information about the character
• Give the title and author of a book the character can be found in
• Please don't include too many spoilers when describing why the character is such a great sidekick
• The day of your post, put your link in below and grab the code for your post so you can see the others that post theirs throughout the week as well
It's only fitting I salute an awesome female character for my last Sidekick Showcase of 2013. Mrs. Claus puts up with a lot and always has a hug or smile waiting for you (at least when I picture her). There is one character I can imagine being the woman standing by her man with wit, steel, and a core of sweetness, Eve Rosser from Rachel Caine's Morganville series. I know it might seem like a stretch because Eve is mega Goth and makes silver-tipped stakes in her free time and then goes on to stake vamps at any time, but underneath the cake of white face power and shiny leather thigh high boots is a sweetheart. I imagine her going all out at Christmas time and making everyone in the Glass House play along. If Michael thought he could get away with unwrapped half-ass presents, she'd correct his thinking on the spot. If Claire got depressed because she missed her parents during the holidays, Eve would take her out for some much needed shopping and fried food. If Shane stopped talking and stopped playing his games because he missed his sister, Eve would hug him and insult him at the same time, the perfect combo to cheer up that messed up boy. Eve is the go-to girl. Sometimes she gets weepy, but Mrs. Claus probably gets emotional all the time.
Happy New Year my awesome bloggers. You're cool people.
“Hey, Mikey? You get her hurt and I'll end you."
"You let anything happen to Eve and I'll do the same," Michael said. He'd just finished kissing Eve, too. "While you're at it, don't get yourself killed, either, bro."
"Ditto. And don't kiss me."
Claire cocked her head at him, exasperated. "Seriously, Shane? Ditto? That's the best you can do?"
Shane and Michael exchanged identical looks and shrugs. Guys.
"Let me show you idiots how it's done," Eve said, and hugged Claire fiercely. She kissed her on the cheek. "I love you, CB. Please take care of yourself, okay?"
"I love you, too," Claire said, and suddenly her throat felt tight and her eyes burned with tears. "I really do."
Shane and Michael watched them with identical expressions of blank bemusement, and finally Shane said, "So basically, it's what I said. Ditto.”

Yes! I love Eve to pieces :) I can't get myself to read Daylighters at the moment, because I know it's the last book in the Morganville series, and I don't want it to end :(
ReplyDeleteI hope you're doing great, Robyn! Happy, Healthy 2014 to you and your family, I hope the new year will be filled with love, laughter, joy and happiness.
Lexxie @ (un)Conventional Bookviews
My library is taking forever processing Daylighters and I'm good with that because I feel the same way. If it doesn't end well or give me enough I might just write my very first fan fic.
DeleteHealthy 2014 is catchy, I was going with Cute and Badass 2014, but I'll throw in healthy too! Here's to more awesome reads, posts, and friends.
LOL That was too much. Almost like you were talking directly to me. So I'm reading the post, waiting for this granny chick who's still kick-ass for you to salute and the next words were Eve Rosser. Cue spitting out my drink. Only you, Robyn. Then the next sentence was, "I know it may seem like a stretch..." hehehe. I totally get it though. I see how your mind works. She would bake them all cookies with way too much frosting that would die their mouths crazy colors :D I love it.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you doing for the New Year?
Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.
I would never think of those cookies! I was just replying to Lexxie that I may need to write some Morganville fanfic after I read Daylighters. If I do, we need to work together! You know Eve better than I do. I must say I'm giddy that I made you spit out your drink! Ha! And a little scared that you know how my mind works. You're still coming back after that insight?
DeleteOn New Year's Eve I'm picking up my former (but I still love her) mother-in-law at the airport pretty close to midnight. I plan to hang out with the boys, run, laugh, and probably scold. The usual. How about you? You know what really sounds good? A movie! I would love to go to a movie on New Year's Day. I hope you have a wonderful send off for 2013. What a crap year. 2014 is a much better number, feels right when I say it, so no more epic illnesses, no ridiculous drama. I've decided.
Oooo another series to add to my TBR list!
ReplyDeleteAnd it includes staking vampires? I'M SO IN!
:) Eve sounds like a pretty neat character
Wit, steel and sweetness? I can't wait to get to know her xD
Happy New Year and God bless!!:)
Yes! Add the Morganville series by Rachel Caine to your TBR list. I absolutely love it. I'm a vamp girl so I'm biased, but Caine is masterful with writing snark and creating awesome characters. Be prepared for the Sidekick Showcase meme to weigh down your bookshelf. We have all started books from each other's character posts.
DeleteHappy New Year and God bless right back!!
Love, love, love EVE!! She is SO BADASS! And you're right - she always knows just what a person needs whether it's a kick in the butt or a hug. :) Way to end the year, Robyn!
ReplyDeleteI'm sending you *hugs* :) just because...
I'll take the hugs with the big smile I'm donning right now! I have a total friend crush on Eve. She takes you the way you are and throws a party. And she snagged Michael. Hello!
DeleteHugs right back to you, missy!!
