5 STARS!!!

Life's been kicking Claire's butt in the last few installments of Rachel Caine's Morganville series. I thought Last Breath was rough, but Black Dawn was one massive adrenaline rush and I missed the snark and taco dinners. Then Bitter Blood gave the fans what we wanted only to slap us around the last third of the book. In Fall of Night, a nearly broken, but determined Claire decides she needs to feel human again in a human world surrounded by...you guessed it, humans! She leaves Morganville, venturing out on her own. Or so we think. As the rose colored glasses fall to the ground and get smashed into little bits, our favorite heroine realizes humans suck, sometimes worse than mean old vamps.

This is my favorite installment yet. Remember those early books when Bishop first came to town? This addition to the series had that same feel to it. Desperation, isolation, terrible life and death decisions, regret, pure bliss. Oh and menacing villains you want to see taken down by whatever means available. Because Claire left Morganville, we miss out on the descriptions of our favorite scary town and those even scarier residents. We don't get Myrnin's lab sessions or the whole gang hanging out together exchanging playful barbs. Caine does an excellent job of making us feel like we're starting a new school right along with Claire. I wanted to be there in person so bad, and then I really didn't. I hope this isn't a spoiler, but I just have to say that anyone pissed at Shane after Bitter Blood will fall in love with him all over again. I mean it. And like those Bishop installments, this book leaves you in a state of What the hell, Caine? Ten more pages. Five? Anything? A freaking teaser?

As a final note, there's this big push to turn the series into a high quality web show. I'm so excited at the prospect I get fangirl dizzy when I think about it. I just hope they don't make everyone pretty. Sure, I have no idea what Oliver looks like anymore because Caine's cleaned him up like a fifty year old woman on day time TV. And Myrnin has this strange chemistry with Claire, but I've never thought of him as attractive in a traditional way. Claire is girl next door pretty. Eve is beautiful, but hides most of it under gobs of white paint. Michael and Amelie are the true standouts with Shane hot in a rough way. What are your thoughts on the whole thing? Do you want a hot Myrnin?

p.s. Happy to be back! I missed this part of my life!!

  1. Great review, Robyn. Book #14? Wow. I'm not sure if I've followed any book series up to fourteen in a chronological order. Most times I might pick a later book in a series and read. I guess that's why I miss character developments and all other important stuffs. Not really my fault, though. Sometimes it's hard getting the particular books you want here, so I just pick the available ones and read.

I missed your posts, but I'm glad you're back.

    Welcome! :)

    1. Thanks for the welcome back, Kaykay! I can't believe I've stuck with a 14 book series. I don't think many authors can keep their characters and plot lines fresh and interesting for that many books. Caine was brilliant to give us a cast we'll follow anywhere. I wish you had a library system like mine so you could get your hands on whatever book you wanted!

      Have a great week, Kaykay!!

  2. Excellent Review! I'm glad you threw that spoiler in there about Shane, LOL! I'm really looking forward to the live webcast. I'm hoping others will get involved to get it off the ground. I'm really glad you linked to it so hopefully everyone that loves the series will donate at least a dollar. I think Michael better be pretty! Then Shane has to be good-looking and Claire girl next door pretty, but everyone else is fair game to me :D Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. Thanks Jaclyn! Michael better be dang pretty. I've been swooning over him since Claire walked down the stairs to find him strumming his guitar all the way back in Glass Houses. Can you just imagine how lit up the blogosphere will be over each episode if they get the show off the ground? It will be so much fun! I forgot about Monica. She has to be so pretty that when she snarls you jump back in shock.

  3. Excellent review Robyn! I agree, Fall of Night is so different from the rest of the books, yet, the characters we know and love (or love to hate) are present. And the cliffhanger left me literally breathless!

I don't want Myrnin to be too hot, he has to look a little deranged, but still kind of nice - you know what I mean? Maybe kind of like Robert Downing Jr. the way he was in between jobs for a while. Kind of good-looking but with scary eyes?

Michael has to be hot! So hot it will be hard to look at him... But at the same time, he has to seem approachable. And I completely agree about Claire and Shane.

I look forward to the web-series a lot - and I truly can't wait for the next book!

I hope you had a fabulous vacation, it's nice to have you back, though! I missed you <3

    1. Aw, thanks for the nice words. I laughed out loud at Michael needing to be so hot it will be hard to look at him! So right. I can't even guess what will happen in the next book. Thank goodness my TBR shelf is packed with great books or I'd be a wreck waiting. I can't get over the fact that this is book 14 and I love the series more than ever.

Do you like any of the other series by Rachel Caine?

      Have a great week, Lexxie!!

    2. I haven't started her Weather Warden series nor her Revitalist series yet, but I have read Red Letter Days - which is only two books, and it's great! Mystery, something paranormal that isn't completely explained, and two very strong female characters.

Have a spectacular Saturday Robyn :)

  4. Welcome back, Robyn! :D The longest series I've followed so far is Sookie, and I still haven't read the last two books, lol. I'm impressed there are 14 books in this series, wow! I like the cover for this book - the girl looks like she's ready to kick some ass! Awesome review! :D

    1. The cover rocks. Claire is pretty tough though she started out being bullied by a gang of pretty girls that had me wanting to jump in the pages and kick some ass. Think violent Mean Girls.

I think we're at the same point in the Sookie series. I was going to quit, but that one FF where we all wrote about our break up series changed my mind. I think I'll save it for later in the year. My TBR shelf grows every time I stop my all my friends' blogs and read their raving reviews!

  5. I have heard great things about this series. Tho I have not read any of the books. If I ever get caught up on all my current series, I do plan on checking it out! Great review!

    1. I'm right there with you. My current reads shelf is about to collapse from the weight of it! And I just picked up another book from the library. I know you're not big on this genre, but I think you'd like the back and forth between the main characters. Also, it's hard predicting where Caine is going to take you.

Thanks for stopping by, Melody (you and your ghost)!

  6. Hey Robyn! This is a series that I LOVE...and a series I'm not caught up on. I did meet Rachel Caine at RT and it was an awesome moment for me. Anyway, I really need to get reading on this series. I'm always a day behind and a dollar short! LOL This one sounds fantastic. And a web show would be awesome. But I agree with you - I wouldn't want the characters to be too beautiful. Caine has done a great job of creating real, flawed characters and I'd want the show to reflect that.

    AND I'M GLAD YOU'RE BACK!! :)

    1. Aw, thanks, Brandee! My sister is behind on the series too. I give her so much sass for it because she's the one who started me on the supernatural course. I cleaned out her bookshelves when I dove into reading and writing.

I think our TBR shelves will always be weighed down. Isn't it great!!
